Sheffield United v Middlesbrough, Monday 9th February 2026, 8pm

I’ve had a few visits to Sheffield in recent times. Jen and I saw Weller at the City Hall a couple of years ago on an evening memorable for pensioners with spectacular Wellerhead hair styles. I’ve been to the Boro’s last two fixtures at Hillsborough and Harry and I went to Bramall Lane when Wilder was in our dugout rather than theirs. On that occasion the 4-1 defeat was followed by a brick being thrown through the back window of our coach, making for a drafty journey home.

This time I travelled down by car with Jen, who was taking the opportunity to visit a friend whilst I went to the game.

Prior to the team announcement, I wondered if we might bring Dael Fry into the side and play three across the back. We didn’t though, instead saving him for the closing stages. Both sides were happy to attack, which suited us, and before long Tommy Conway’s fourth goal in four games put us in front. If the result stayed the same, we would return to the top of the table for the first time since the Rob Edward days.

We’ve improved tremendously since then and a Riley McGree goal reinforced our lead and sent us in at the break two goals to the good.

Wilder got some stick from our end, as did Paddy Bamford to a lesser extent. Bamford responded by reducing the deficit and bringing Sheffield back into the game. They had a player sent off, which made it harder for them, and we saw the game out well. As we left at the end the chants of ‘We are top of the league, say, we are top of the league’ rang out for the first time since October.

It’s Coventry away next. That should give some indication of who finishes there.
